WELCOME Newest Board Members!
Early Head Start will launch in 2010!
In November, we were notified that we would be getting Early Head Start expansion to serve 82 new children (birth-to-three) in south Seattle and Sea-Tac.
We plan to focus our recruitment efforts on several underserved ethnic communities including: Latinos, Somali, Burmese, and Bhutanese.
We expect services for Early Head Start to begin in June 2010.
Nominated for Center of Excellence
Denise Louie Education Center was one of three Washington Head Start grantees nominated by Governor Gregoire to submit an application to be considered as a Center of Excellence. If selected as one of the ten national centers, we would receive $200,000 to promote and replicate our work.
Governor Gregoire writes "You and your team have achieved a high level of quality, and I applaud your innovative approaches to enhancing your services and your willingness to share your best practices with others."
Janice Deguchi, Denise Louie Education Center's Executive Director, says, "It is just an honor to be nominated by the Governor. With the increasing diversity of our state and nation, we have much to share in supporting home language and English language development in children, how to develop leadership of non-English speaking parents, and increase access of families where English, immigration status and discrimination are barriers to their success.
“If we are successful, we hope to share what we have learned so that children and families that face these barriers will meet with greater compassion, support and ultimately success in school and life."

Denise Louie Education Center is pleased to include Janey Petty to our Board of Directors.
Janey Petty is a management consultant for Point B, a firm specializing in project leadership for their clients and a mother of a four-year-old daughter. Being an immigrant herself at three-years old (born in Seoul, South Korea), her parents came over to Seattle "for [the] opportunities and the American Dream".
When asked why she joined the Board of Directors, she states "DLEC's mission speaks to me on so many levels. As a parent, a professional member of the community, and as a member of the immigrant community. DLEC is about more than just preparing children for kindergarten. DLEC serves familiies to enrich and develop their children's lives and skills for beyond the classroom.
Being a parent of a pre-schooler, I can see first-hand the incredible value of early education in the development of our children. Coming from an immigrant family myself, it is also with first hand knowledge I remember my siblings and I going through the challenges of attending school with little/no preparation and little language skills."
Denise Louie Education Center is also pleased to include Dan Chhan to our Board of Directors.
Dan Chhan was born in Bellingham, WA and went to the University of Washington is now an entrepreneur. He has a personal connection with the mission and values of Denise Louie Education Center. "Growing up in an immigrant and refugee family, I have always wanted to join an organization that gives back to this community and see these families grow. I truly believe the skills and values that are learned during these times can change their future."
Dan pretty much sums up the whole reason why Denise Louie Education Center provides services to over 300 at-risk, low-income children (prenatal to five years old) and their families because "this is the time we help the children and families build a foundation for their future." |
