What We Do

Our goals are to prepare children for success in kindergarten and support family self sufficiency by providing access to resources.
Services for Children – Children will leave DLEC with the skills needed to function as part of a respectful community, specifically acquiring problem solving skills, respect for themselves, others and the environment, demonstrate age appropriate communication skills and the ability to self-regulate.
• Head Start is for low income children ages, 3-5
o Part day meets 3.5 hours/day Monday-Thursday, September through May
o Full day services are offered Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm with occasional closures for meetings, training and cleaning.
• Early Head Start is for low income children ages pre-natal to three years old
o Home visitors come to parent’s home weekly for 1.5 hour meetings to discuss child development, health, and family support issues
o Socializations occur bi-monthly In the community or at our Early Head Start office in Beacon Hill
• Play and Learn groups are open to any child under 5.
o Groups of parents/caregivers and their child participate in play based learning activities
o The Spanish group meets at Columbia Library every Thursday at 10am
o The English group meets weekly. Check back for time/location.
Services to Parents – Families will access at least one agency/resource to benefit their families during the year.
• Bilingual family service staff and home visitors assist parents to access the resources they require to better address their individual family goals
• We provide information and assistance to access clothing, food, employment, health and dental care, ESL training and financial literacy classes.
• We provide parenting information to help parents become more effective teachers of their children
• Parents learn leadership skills when they participate in our policy council which is similar to a board of directors
Locations
• We serve children and families in South Seattle and the City of Sea-Tac.
• Head Start operates at 3 sites: International District, Beacon Hill, and Lake Washington Apartments
• Early Head Start provides home based services and group socializations in Beacon Hill and in the community
